Front load washers get a reputation for smelling. The reputation is earned, but the cause is almost always the same three ingredients in combination: leftover detergent, trapped moisture, and a door gasket designed to hold water in. None of those are faults. They are consequences of how a high efficiency machine works, and all three are manageable once you know which one you are actually dealing with.
Why this is a front loader problem
A top load machine with an agitator fills a deep tub with water, drains it downward, and leaves the lid open by default. Air moves through it. A front loader tumbles clothes through a shallow pool of water, uses a fraction of the volume, and seals the door with a large flexible gasket that has folds in it. When the cycle ends, that gasket holds a ring of water, and the drum stays dark and humid behind a closed door.
Add the second factor. High efficiency machines use so little water that detergent is not fully rinsed away unless the dose is right. What stays behind is a film of surfactant, and surfactant film plus warmth plus moisture is a growth medium. The black speckling people find in the folds of a gasket is biofilm, not mold in the drywall sense, and it feeds on residue rather than on the rubber.
Top loaders are not immune, they are just slower to show it. Machines like the Amana NTW4519JW and the 13 cycle GE GTW500ASNWS still accumulate residue under the tub ring and in the dispenser, but the open lid does most of the drying work for you.
Detergent overdosing is the root cause more often than the gasket
This is the part that surprises people. More detergent does not clean better in an HE machine. Past the point where the surfactant has bound to the available soil, the excess simply stays in the load and in the drum, and modern machines have very little rinse water to carry it away.
The practical signs of chronic overdosing are consistent:
- Suds still visible late in the cycle, or a machine that keeps adding rinses on its own.
- Towels that feel stiff and stop absorbing well.
- A sweet or sour smell in the drum within a day of the last load.
- A gray cast on white cotton that does not improve with hotter washes.
The correct dose is on the detergent label, scaled to load size and water hardness, and it is usually far less than the fill line on the cap suggests. Concentrated detergents have made this worse, because the cap did not shrink when the formula got stronger. If your water is soft, cut the dose further. Softeners and hardness minerals both change how much surfactant is actually needed, and hard water pushes the number the other way.
Fabric softener deserves its own mention. It is a wax based coating by design. It builds up in dispensers and on gasket folds faster than detergent does, and it is the most common single cause of a dispenser drawer that has stopped draining.

The tub clean cycle is not decorative
Almost every modern washer has a dedicated drum or tub clean cycle. It runs hot, it runs long, and it runs without a load, because the point is to raise the drum temperature high enough and for long enough to break down residue that a normal wash never touches. It is not the same as running an empty hot cycle.
Use the cleaning product your manufacturer manual specifies. This matters more than it sounds. Chlorine bleach is acceptable in some machines and explicitly discouraged in others, and pouring bleach into a dispenser designed for a tablet cleaner is a good way to damage seals. Never combine a washer cleaning tablet with bleach, and never mix cleaning products in a drum. If your manual gives a frequency for the tub clean cycle on your model, that is the number to follow, and it is the only one worth trusting.
Where the machine itself helps
Manufacturers have taken this problem seriously enough to engineer around it. The GE GFW550SSNWW is described by GE as combining an UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock and Microban antimicrobial technology, which is a ventilation approach plus a treated surface rather than a cleaning routine. The larger GE GFW850SPNRS follows the same family of features with added connectivity.
LG takes the ventilation route as well, and machines such as the LG WM4000HWA and the LG WM4200HBA include tub clean programs in the cycle list. The compact Electrolux ELFW4222AW adds steam, which raises drum temperature during the cycle rather than only during a cleaning run.
None of these features remove the need to wipe the gasket. If you are shopping and odor is your main worry, the feature to look for is a vent or fan system that dries the drum after the cycle, not an antimicrobial claim on its own. There are more options across the washers category.
Combination and portable machines
Ventless washer dryer combinations concentrate the problem, because the same drum that washes also holds warm humid air through a drying phase. A unit like the LG WashCombo needs the door left open between uses just as much as a standalone washer does, arguably more.

- Run the tub clean cycle with the product your manual names, at the interval your manual gives.
- Unplug the machine, or switch it off at the breaker, before reaching into the drain pump filter or removing any panel.
Odor in a washer is a maintenance outcome, not a defect. The machines that stay fresh are not the ones with the most features. They are the ones whose owners dose correctly and let the drum dry.
