When to Repair a Home Appliance and When to Replace It

The repair or replace question gets asked backwards most of the time. People start from the appliance, decide it feels old, and go shopping. The better starting point is the failed part, because a great many appliance failures are one inexpensive component on an otherwise healthy machine, and a smaller number are the one component that is worth more than the machine.

Identify the part before you value the decision

Appliances are not monolithic. A refrigerator that will not make ice may have a working compressor, a working sealed system and a failed ice maker module. That is a parts swap. Those are averages across a population, not a prediction for your machine. Use them as a sense check. A failure at year three on a full size machine is bad luck and usually worth repairing. The same failure at year fifteen is a machine telling you what comes next.

3. Are parts actually available?

This is the question that quietly decides more cases than the other two. Manufacturers support parts for a limited period after a model is discontinued, and control boards are usually the first thing to go unavailable. If the failed part is obsolete, the decision is made for you regardless of how the arithmetic looked.

Cases where repair is nearly always right

Dryers are the clearest example. A vented dryer is a drum, a motor, a belt, a heater and a few switches, and almost every part is inexpensive and accessible. A machine like the GE GTD42EASJWW is mechanically simple enough that a single failed component rarely justifies replacement.

Refrigeration is the only appliance in the house that never switches off, which is why the efficiency gap compounds.

Everywhere else the case is weaker. A modern dryer uses less energy than an old one mostly because it senses moisture and stops, not because the heater changed. Do not let an energy argument carry a decision that the repair arithmetic does not support. Diagnose before you decide, and stay safe doing it

  • Ask a service company whether the diagnostic fee is credited against the repair. Many credit it, and it changes the arithmetic.

Repair or replace is not a matter of sentiment about how long things used to last. It is three numbers: what the part costs, how far into its life the machine is, and whether the part still exists. Get those and the decision usually makes itself.
