Blenders fail in a small number of predictable ways, and only one of them is the motor. Blades go dull, gaskets harden, drive couplers round off, and jars craze until they look permanently dirty. Which of those you can fix yourself depends almost entirely on how the jar was designed, and that is a decision the manufacturer made before you bought it.
Three architectures, three repair stories
Countertop blenders come in three basic shapes, and the shape tells you what is serviceable.
- Removable blade assembly. The blade unit unscrews from the base of the jar, sandwiching a gasket between them. Everything in the wear path is a spare part. This is the classic full size design and it is the friendliest to own long term.
- Sealed or captive blade. The blade is fixed into the jar as a single unit. There is no gasket to lose and no leak path, which is why manufacturers like it, but a failed bearing means a new jar rather than a new part.
- Inverted cup style. A blade lid screws onto a drinking cup. The blade and gasket are usually one replaceable module, and the cups themselves are consumable.
High performance machines mostly sit in the second camp. What actually wears
Blades get blunt, and it matters less than you think
Blender blades are not knives. Most are blunt from the factory by design, because the work is done by the velocity of the tip and by the vortex it creates, not by a cutting edge. What actually degrades is the edge profile and the straightness of the wings. A blade that has been run repeatedly against ice or hard seeds develops rounded, slightly bent tips, and the vortex weakens before anything looks dramatic.
The symptom is a machine that still sounds strong but leaves chunks, or one that needs the tamper for a task it used to handle alone. Gaskets are the most common leak
On a removable blade design, the gasket is a rubber or silicone ring that seals the jar to the blade housing. Heat, detergent and dishwasher cycles all harden it. A hardened gasket takes a permanent set, stops sealing under pressure, and the first sign is a thin drip down the outside of the jar during a long blend.
Gaskets are cheap and usually available. Two habits extend them: rinse the blade assembly by hand rather than sending it through a hot dishwasher cycle, and reassemble without overtightening, because crushing a gasket deforms it faster than using it does.
Drive couplers round off
Between the motor shaft and the blade shaft sits a coupler, often a splined plastic or rubber part. It is designed to be the sacrificial link, and it wears from repeated starts under load and from jamming the jar with frozen fruit and hitting the switch. A rounded coupler slips, and the giveaway is a motor that spins up loudly with the blades barely turning. This is a genuine repair, and it is one of the few places where a low cost part saves an entire appliance.
The jar itself
Copolyester jars craze. Fine surface cracks develop from thermal cycling and from contact with certain detergents, and the jar goes permanently cloudy. It is cosmetic at first and structural eventually. Glass jars do not craze but they chip, and a chipped rim is a reason to retire a jar rather than to keep using it carefully.

Where parts availability is designed in
Commercial units are built on the assumption that parts will be replaced, because a machine in a shop cannot be thrown away every year. Hand blenders are a different problem
An immersion blender has no jar and no gasket in the usual sense. The wear items are the bell, the shaft seal and the coupling between the motor body and the shaft. A Braun MQ505 or a Breville Control Grip will typically fail at the shaft seal long before the motor does, and the symptom is liquid working its way up the shaft. Once that happens, the shaft assembly is the part to replace, not the whole tool.

Cleaning and safety, briefly
- Unplug the base before you remove, refit or reach into a jar. A blender base with power connected and a blade in your hand is the one genuinely dangerous moment in blender ownership.
- Never put your hand into a jar to clear a jam. Empty it, unplug it, and use a spatula.
- Check your manual before putting any part in the dishwasher. Many blade assemblies and copolyester jars are hand wash items, and hot detergent cycles are what causes crazing and gasket hardening.
- The self clean trick, warm water and a drop of dish soap run on low, works well but is not a substitute for taking a removable blade assembly apart occasionally.
- A burning smell means stop. Thermal cutouts protect the motor, and repeatedly tripping one is how a repairable machine becomes scrap.
The short version: if a blender leaks, suspect the gasket. If it spins without blending, suspect the coupler. If it sounds strong and leaves chunks, suspect the blade. If it cuts out mid blend, stop and let it cool rather than pressing on. Three of those four are inexpensive parts, and knowing which is which is the difference between a repair and a replacement.
