A bread machine is one of the few kitchen appliances where the parts that wear out are cheap, obvious and designed to be replaced. The motor and the controller usually outlast everything else. What actually ends a bread machine, or at least ends the good loaves, is the paddle, the pan, and the coating on the inside of that pan.
The paddle takes the abuse
The kneading paddle is a small plastic or metal blade that clips onto a shaft in the base of the pan. During the knead phase it drives a stiff dough against the pan wall for several minutes at a time, which is a surprisingly heavy mechanical load for a part that size. Over years, three things happen to it: the coating wears off the leading edge, the drive hole rounds out where it meets the shaft, and the plastic goes brittle from repeated heat cycling.
The good news is that paddles are stocked as spares, and they are model specific rather than generic. The pan is the expensive consumable

Once a coating is failing, the honest answer is that there is no fix. Recoating is not practical at consumer scale, and cooking on a flaking surface is not something to carry on with. The question becomes whether a replacement pan is available for your model and what it costs relative to the machine.
The shaft seal nobody thinks about
Underneath the pan, the paddle shaft passes through the floor of the pan into a coupling that connects to the motor. There is a seal at that point. When it fails, dough liquid seeps through and the shaft starts to bind, and the first symptom is a paddle that will not spin freely when you turn it by hand with the pan removed.
This is worth checking every so often, because a binding shaft puts load straight onto the drive belt or gearbox, and that turns a pan problem into a machine problem.

Care that actually extends the life
- Unplug the machine before removing the pan for cleaning, and before wiping anything inside the baking chamber.
- Follow the manufacturer manual on washing. If it says hand wash, that instruction is about the coating and the seal, not about convenience.
- Wipe the pan out while it is warm rather than soaking it cold. Warm residue lifts with a soft cloth.
- Store the paddle off the shaft. Leaving it seated with residue underneath is how shafts seize.
- Never use metal to lift a stuck loaf. A silicone spatula and patience cost less than a pan.
- Check that the pan is properly latched before starting. A pan that unseats mid knead can damage the drive.
Choosing with parts in mind
If a bread machine is going to live in your kitchen for a decade, parts availability is worth as much as the cycle list.
