The claim that a dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand is repeated so often that it has stopped being examined. It is usually true, but the reason it is true has nothing to do with the machine being clever, and there is a version of handwashing that uses less water than a machine cycle. Meanwhile the water metric printed on washing machines, the water factor, is genuinely useful and almost nobody knows how to read it.
Why handwashing is unpredictable
A dishwasher uses a fixed amount of water per cycle. Handwashing uses whatever the tap delivers for as long as it is open, and that is the whole difference.
Kitchen faucets sold in the United States are capped at 2.2 gallons per minute under federal rules, and faucets carrying a WaterSense label are limited to a lower flow than that. Those are published standards rather than measurements of your sink. Run a 2.2 gallon per minute tap for ten minutes and you have used 22 gallons before any arithmetic about the dishes. Run the same tap for four minutes and it is under 9. The method decides the outcome, not the person.
Filling a basin changes the picture completely. Two basins, one for washing and one for rinsing, with the tap closed in between, uses a fixed quantity in the same way a dishwasher does. Done that way, a small load of dishes by hand can use less water than any machine cycle. What it cannot match is the water temperature, since a dishwasher heats its own water well above what hands tolerate, which matters for grease and for sanitizing.

The countertop figures look dramatic until you account for load size. A machine such as the HAVA TDQR with its built in water tank or the Farberware FDW05WHA uses roughly a third of the water of a full size machine and holds roughly a third of the dishes, so per plate the two are much closer than the headline numbers suggest. The honest comparison is gallons per place setting, and none of these listings gives you the pair of numbers you would need to calculate it. The Sharp SDW6757ES states 3.5 gallons without stating a place setting count, and the Bosch SHEM63W55N states 16 place settings without stating a water figure.
How a dishwasher gets away with so little water
A dishwasher does not run water over the dishes and send it away. It fills a small sump, recirculates that same water through the spray arms for the length of the wash, filters food out of it, drains it, and refills for the rinse. The total is the sum of a handful of fills, not a flow rate multiplied by time. A long cycle can therefore use less water than a short one, because the extra time is spent recirculating water the machine already has.
Water hardness is the complication. In hard water areas, dissolved minerals interfere with detergent and leave deposits, and machines compensate by using more rinse water or by demanding more detergent. Some machines integrate a softener for this reason, which is unusual on a small unit. Water factor, and how to read it
Clothes washers use a metric called the water factor, and its successor the integrated water factor. Both express gallons of water used per cycle divided by the tub capacity in cubic feet. A lower number is better, because it means less water for the same amount of laundry space. Energy Star publishes threshold values that models must beat to qualify, and those thresholds tighten over time.
The arithmetic runs in both directions. If a machine has a 4.5 cubic foot tub and an integrated water factor of 3.2, the implied water use is 4.5 x 3.2 = 14.4 gallons per cycle. That is an illustration of the calculation and not a figure for any specific product. Run it in reverse and you can compare two machines of different sizes fairly, which is the entire point of dividing by capacity.
Here is the catch: no washer in this catalog states a water factor. Capacity is recorded on most of them, so the LG WM4000HWA at 4.5 cubic feet, the LG WM4200HWA with 14 wash cycles and the Amana NTW4519JW at 3.8 cubic feet can all be compared on volume, but the water half of the ratio is missing. The EnergyGuide label on the machine in the store has it. The product page does not.
The capacity trap
Because the water factor is calculated per cycle, a large machine run half empty performs far worse in practice than its rating suggests. Buying a bigger tub and then washing the same small loads at the same frequency increases water use, it does not reduce it. The rating rewards machines that use little water for their size, and it assumes you fill them.
Load sensing helps here, since a machine that weighs the load and meters water accordingly closes some of the gap. Older top loaders that fill to a level chosen by a dial do not, and they use a great deal of water by design because they need to float the load. That is the underlying reason high efficiency top loaders removed the central agitator: less water is needed if the clothes do not have to be submerged.
