Standby Power: What Kitchen Appliances Draw When Nobody Is Using Them

Most kitchen appliances are never actually off. The plug is in, the control board is awake, a clock is lit, a Wi-Fi radio is checking in with a server, and in some cases a heater is holding a tank of water near brewing temperature. None of that appears on a spec sheet, and none of it appears in the wattage figure a listing gives you, because that figure describes the machine working flat out rather than sitting idle.

What standby power actually is

Standby power is what a device draws while it is plugged in and not performing its job. In a kitchen it comes from a short list of sources:

  • A clock or a display that stays lit.
  • The control board and its power supply, which has to stay awake to notice you pressing a button.
  • A Wi-Fi or Bluetooth radio maintaining a connection.
  • A touch panel, which needs a live sensing circuit to detect a finger.
  • A heater keeping water or a plate warm between uses.
  • A transformer that is inefficient at very low loads, which is common on older designs.

The important line is the bottom one. A single appliance holding a heater warm at 25 watts around the clock consumes more in a year than many refrigerators consume in several months. The small numbers at the top of the table are the ones people worry about, and they are not where the money is.

The listings do not tell you any of this

Not one product in this catalog publishes a standby figure. What the listings give is peak or rated wattage, which is a different quantity entirely. The only reliable way to know what a specific appliance draws at idle is to measure it with a plug in energy monitor, left in place for a day so it captures a full cycle of heater and radio activity. Spot readings mislead, because a brewer that reads zero the moment you look at it may have been drawing 200 watts thirty seconds earlier while it reheated the tank. A monitor that logs cumulative kilowatt hours over 24 hours gives you a number you can multiply by 365 and trust, which is more than any listing in this catalog will give you.
