Cycle End Alerts And Appliance Notifications: Signal Or Noise?

A single connected appliance sending you a message when it finishes is helpful. Four connected appliances, each convinced its own status is important, produce a stream that people mute within a month and then never unmute. The failure is not the individual alert. It is that appliance notifications arrive with no priority attached, so a filter clogging warning and a spin cycle finishing look identical on a lock screen.

Five kinds of alert, and only two that need you now

Appliance notifications fall into a small number of categories, and sorting them by required response time is more useful than sorting them by appliance.

The interesting row is state change, because it is the one that is genuinely valuable and the one that generates the most volume. A washer finishing matters, since wet laundry degrades. A dryer finishing matters less, since dry laundry mostly wrinkles. A dishwasher finishing barely matters at all, because clean dishes are patient. Yet all three send the same notification with the same weight.

Quiet appliances make the alert worth more

There is a direct and underappreciated relationship between how quiet a machine is and how much a notification is worth. Bosch publishes a 42 decibel rating for the Bosch SHPM78Z55N, which is quiet enough that in an open plan room you will not reliably know whether it is running. Bosch solves that with a physical answer rather than a phone: the same listing describes an InfoLight beam projected on the floor, which tells you the machine is running without telling anybody anything. That is a well designed notification, and it requires no account, no radio and no attention.

The LG WM4500HBA is listed at 45 decibels, which is quiet for a washer and creates the same situation. At the other end, the Bosch WTG86403UC carries a published figure of 67 decibels, and a machine at that level announces its own state perfectly well through a closed door. The quieter the appliance, the more an alert is doing real work. The louder it is, the more the alert is duplicating something you already know.

The onboard alternatives are better than they get credit for

  • A beeper you can silence. The Toshiba EM131A5C-BS lists a mutable buzzer, which is unusual at its level and genuinely useful in a room where people sleep or work. Control over an alert is worth more than the alert.
  • Indicator lights that mean one thing. The Silonn SLIM01B ice maker uses front panel lights for a full basket and a low reservoir. Two states, two lights, no ambiguity and nothing to configure.
  • A maintenance indicator that only appears when it matters. FlowSense on the LG DLEX8900B stays dark until the duct is restricted, which means seeing it is information rather than noise.
  • A delayed start. The HAVA TDJR09 countertop dishwasher lists a delayed start with a touch screen and a child lock. Scheduling a finish time removes the need to be told about it.

The common thread is that a good local signal is unambiguous, arrives in the room where the action is, and does not compete with anything else for attention. A push notification has none of those properties by default.

There is a design principle hiding in those four examples. A local signal is bound to a place. You see the ice maker light when you are in the kitchen, which is where you would do something about it. A push notification is bound to a person, so it follows you into a meeting, a film and the middle of the night, and delivers information you cannot act on until you get home. Binding an alert to a location rather than to a person is often the better engineering choice, and it is one of the few areas where the older, simpler appliances were straightforwardly right.

The volume problem, honestly counted

Assume a household with a connected washer, dryer and dishwasher. Five wash loads a week, five dry loads, five dishwasher runs. If every state change is announced, that is fifteen notifications a week before a single fault or consumable reminder. Add a connected microwave and a connected coffee maker and the number climbs while the usefulness does not. Fifteen interruptions a week is enough that people stop reading them, and the moment they stop reading them the fault alerts stop working too. That is the actual cost of leaving everything switched on: not annoyance, but the loss of the two alert types that mattered.

What the listings do not say

Nothing in this catalog describes notification behavior in any detail. Listings name Wi-Fi, an app or a platform, and none of them state which events push, whether individual alerts can be turned off separately, whether a fault alert can be prioritized above a finish alert, or whether alerts continue if the account is inactive. LG describes ThinQ on the LG WM4000HWA as remote alerts and diagnostics, which is a category name, not a specification. Anyone claiming to know how granular the controls are on a specific model is guessing.

This matters because notification design is precisely the thing that separates a connected appliance you keep using from one you disconnect after six weeks. An app that lets you enable a fault alert and disable a finish alert independently is a well made product. An app that offers one switch marked notifications is not, and you will end up choosing between all of it and none of it. There is no way to tell which you are getting from a product listing, which makes it another good reason to try the app during the return window rather than after.

If you want X, look for Y

If you want one useful alert and no clutter, connect the washer and nothing else. It is the appliance whose finished state has a genuine deadline attached. Leave the rest of the dryers and dishwashers on their beepers.

If you want to know a quiet machine is running, look for a physical indicator rather than a phone. The built-in dishwashers here that publish both a low decibel figure and a floor beam have thought the problem through properly.

If you want the appliance to stay out of your attention entirely, buy one with nothing to announce. The Keurig K-Express listing states it has no clock, no timer, no app and no connectivity of any kind, and a machine that cannot notify you is a machine you will never have to mute.

Set up new appliance notifications the way a sensible person sets up any app: everything off, then turn on the two you can name a reason for. It is far easier to add an alert you find you want than to reclaim attention after it has been spent.
