Dryer Lint, Ducting and Airflow: Why a Slow Dryer Is Usually Not the Dryer

When a dryer starts needing two cycles to finish a load, most people conclude the heating element is going. Occasionally it is. Far more often the heater is fine and the machine is starving for air. A dryer is not really a heater with a drum attached. It is an air pump that happens to warm the air on its way through, and everything downstream of the drum determines how well it works.

How a vented dryer actually dries

Room air is drawn in, heated, passed through the tumbling load where it picks up moisture, then pushed out through the lint screen, the blower, the duct and the exterior vent hood. The load dries because humid air leaves the building. If that air cannot leave at the rate the blower expects, the drum simply fills with saturated air, the load stops giving up moisture, and the cycle timer keeps running.

This is why airflow problems look exactly like heating problems from the outside. The clothes are hot. The machine is running. Nothing is drying. On a sensor equipped machine such as the GE PTD60EBSRWS, which uses moisture sensing to decide when to stop, restricted airflow can also push the sensor into running long, because the clothes genuinely are still damp.

The lint screen is only the first filter

Cleaning the lint screen between loads is the baseline, and most people do it. Two things are less obvious.

First, dryer sheets and fabric softener leave a film on the screen mesh. That film is invisible and it blocks airflow even when the screen looks clean. The check is simple: hold the screen under a running faucet. Water should pass straight through. If it pools, the mesh needs washing with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then full drying before it goes back.

Second, lint that gets past the screen collects in the lint trap housing below it. On many machines a narrow vacuum attachment reaches down into that cavity. This is worth doing periodically on any dryer, and it is the step almost nobody performs.

The duct run is where most of the loss happens

Manufacturers rate a dryer for a maximum equivalent duct length, and that budget gets spent by both straight runs and fittings. A 90 degree elbow can count for several feet of straight duct on its own. Add three elbows and a long run to an exterior wall, and a machine that is fine in one house will underperform in another with no fault of its own.

Check the exterior hood with the dryer running. You should feel a strong, warm, steady flow. Weak flow at the hood with a clean lint screen points at the duct, not the appliance. Lint is a genuine fire risk, and this is not a scare line

Clothes dryers are a recognized cause of residential fires, and fire authorities consistently identify failure to clean as the leading contributing factor. Lint is finely divided cellulose sitting next to a heat source in a moving air stream. That is a combustible dust in the technical sense.

Treat the following as non negotiable rather than as optional good habits:

  • Clean the lint screen before or after every load. Not weekly.
  • Have the full duct run cleaned periodically, and more often with a long run or a household that dries daily.
  • Never operate a dryer with the lint screen missing or damaged.
  • Never vent a dryer into a crawl space, an attic or the room itself. Moisture and lint both have to leave the building.
  • Do not dry anything that has been in contact with cooking oil, gasoline, solvents or wax. Oil residue survives washing and can self heat in a warm drum.
  • Unplug an electric dryer, or shut off the gas supply and the power on a gas dryer, before removing any panel or reaching into the lint housing.

Gas dryers add a second reason to leave internal work alone. Machines like the LG DLG3401W burn fuel inside the cabinet, so the duct is carrying combustion products as well as moisture. A blocked duct on a gas machine is not just a laundry problem. Gas appliance work belongs with a qualified technician.

Ventless machines move the maintenance, they do not remove it

Condenser and heat pump dryers recirculate air instead of exhausting it, condensing moisture into a reservoir or a drain line. There is no duct to block, which removes one whole category of problem. In exchange there is a condenser or evaporator that collects lint, and a reservoir that has to be emptied.

  • Did the washer spin properly? A load that came out of the washer soaked will take a long time in any dryer, and this is one of the most common causes of all.
  • Is there strong flow at the exterior vent hood while the machine runs?
  • Is the duct behind the machine crushed, kinked or sagging?

Only after all five come back clean is the appliance itself a reasonable suspect.
